How a Urologist Got Into Wellness and Aesthetics

Southbound Coffee Roasters, founded by Dr. Josh Griffin

I will start out by saying I have done stranger things.

In 2017 I was living in Columbus, MS and working full time as a board certified urologist when I decided to take my coffee roasting hobby to a new level. My coffee snobbery and general distaste for Starbucks drove me to purchase a small countertop roaster that, on more than one occasion, set off our fire alarm. That lasted about two months before I decided to go bigger. I ordered a commercial grade Dietrich roaster from Idaho, picked my own color (bright orange), and put my logo on it. Southbound Coffee Roasters was born.

The roaster could not fit in my house. It needed an exhaust system and a gas line just to run. I partnered with a local coffee shop and spent my evenings and weekends roasting. I learned everything from cultivation and processing to what happens on a molecular level when you heat coffee beans. I named every blend after a song. My favorite was Sunshine Daydream, an ode to the Grateful Dead.

Time for a Change

In early 2018 I was offered a position at a urology practice in Oxford, MS. I had always loved the town and had deep respect for the physicians there. I worked my last day in Columbus on a Friday and started at Oxford Urology Associates the following Monday, February 12, 2018. It was the busiest clinic day of my career up to that point, but I had great support and a surprise visit from my boys that I really needed.

Moving to Oxford was one of the best decisions I ever made. The coffee roaster stayed behind. A local church pastor bought the business and carried it forward, using the income to fund missions. It turned out better than anything I could have done with it.

What Else Can I Do for You?

About a year into my Oxford practice, I started noticing a pattern. Patients would finish their appointment and I would ask if there was anything else I could do for them. The answers I kept hearing were not about urology. They were about fatigue, low drive, stubborn weight that would not budge no matter how much they exercised, trouble focusing, and poor sleep. Their other doctors did not have answers. Some had simply been ignored.

I could not ignore it. I was dealing with some of those same issues myself.

The Learning Never Stops

So I went back to learning. A doctor who stops asking questions and learning is not the doctor for you. I started with hormone therapy, specifically bio-identical pellet replacement, and tried it myself so I could speak to patients from experience. The procedure takes about five minutes in the office. The results were real. People had more energy, better sleep, better sex lives, and became more proactive about their health overall. Word spread. Patients kept coming back.

I brought on a nurse practitioner, Lisa Clark, who was just as passionate about wellness as I was and continues to be a major part of what we do. In 2021 we purchased the building next to our urology clinic and opened a dedicated space for these treatments. That is when Revive Wellness Clinic of Oxford was born.

Building Something Bigger

I quickly realized that hormone balance is just one piece of the puzzle. We added peptide therapy and shockwave therapy for sexual wellness, IV vitamins and supplements for energy, sleep, immune support, and recovery, and body contouring and aesthetic treatments including Emsella, Emsculpt NEO, and Emface. We wanted to give people the tools to restore, re-energize, and feel confident both inside and out.

None of it would have been possible without the team we have built. We now have three nurse practitioners and recently opened our Starkville location under the direction of Dr. Clifton Scott, a like-minded physician and good friend.

I am still practicing urology full time and spend my remaining hours reading and continuing to learn. I am starting a course in functional nutrition with the long term goal of certification in functional medicine.

The future at Revive is exciting. We are all in on helping transform lives. The learning never stops. There is always room for more knowledge.

Until next time,
